There was a buzz of excitement in the air. It was that time of year again; where we could celebrate all day, surrounded by friends, family and a cheerful atmosphere. Shakira couldn’t help but bounce around, causing her brothers & sisters to give weird looks at her.

“Why are you bouncing around so much sis?” They all mewed in a songful manner.

“Because today is Chinese New Year! This is your first time getting to experience it and I can’t wait to see your reactions,” She replied with a grin from ear to ear. “But first, we need to prepare and look our best. Go to mother and she’ll help you look the part.”

Content with this, they padded off into the den, leaving Shakira to prepare herself. There was still a slight chill in the air with frost touching the tips of the meadow grass, causing her to shiver a little. The sun had only just started to rise when she had awoke, so she hoped that it would get a little warmer by the time the celebrations started. She headed out across the meadows in the direction of a small river to start getting ready. All the other cats hated getting wet so only went there for a drink. But Shakira was different. She loved everything to do with the water, especially how much cleaner and shinier her coat would be after a quick dip. So when she got there she immediately lied down, rolling around in the clear, shallow waters until her coat was drenched. I think that’s enough of that now. Time to dry and groom myself now, she concluded. As she got up, water dripped from her tail, causing it to become flat and droopy. Not the best of sights she wanted to be seen in. However a quick shake of her body rid it of most of the water, giving her the chance to make her coat look a lot better. Shakira flicked her tail a little more to free herself from the remaining water, padding off to a cleared patch to rest for a while.

By the time she got to the cleared patch, most of the frost had melted and the sun’s warm rays started to touch her body. Now it was time for the arduous but satisfying task of grooming her fur. Starting off with her yellow and black, long-furred tail, she licked away until her tail was nothing but fluffy. Just how she liked it. Most of her body was short furred and so didn’t need sorting, except for her red chest and wavy line of dull red along the sides of her body. They were relatively quick to do but also tricky so she started to think of what the celebrations had been like last year. There had been lights strewn about the town, parades down the streets and happiness all around. Every animal had been there, from mustelas to horses, joined together in such a big event. No quarrels, no fighting. Just peace and cheer. She wished it was like this every day of the year but knew that nature wouldn’t allow it. A little chuckle escaped her as she then remembered that, when she went to her first celebration, everyone had thought that she was dressed especially for the New Year due to her traditional colours. Several of the cats even asked where we had found the ingredients to make such stunning colour dyes. Little had they known that it was natural until we visited them afterwards. With this blissful memory inside her head, she used her paws to do swift styling of her forelock and cleaning of her ears before she was ready. Now it was time to go back, fluffed, styled and prepared to see what her siblings may look like. With a spring in her step, Shakira headed back to their den to show off her shiny coat.

Maybe I will have time to go for a fun little hunt too before I have to go back, she thought as she wandered back through the meadows. No sooner had she thought this than her ears pricked up at the sound of something small rustling in the grass nearby. Instinctively, her body dropped to the ground, paws stretched and ready to pounce. She stealthily crept towards the sound, readying her back legs when suddenly a rat jumped out at her, causing her to fly into the air from surprise.

“HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!” The rat shouted as he softly landed on her back.

“What are you doing?! Who are you?!” She exclaimed, trying to turn her head around enough that she could see the rat.

“My name’s Cheshire and it’s New Year, a time where we can all come together. Now hold still,” he replied with a smile.

Unsure of what to think, she did as told and stayed as still as she could, watching as he climbed atop her head. He stood in-between her ears so she could do nothing but feel his small feet pattering.

“What were you doing anyway? I heard you moving along and was heading towards you but you made me jump.”

She was hesitant to reply but did so for good manners. “…I was hunting. I came back from the river after getting prepared and heard some rustling so thought I would ‘investigate’.”

Cheshire tutted in a trembling manner, “Tsk, t-today is not the day for hunting. Today is the day for friendship, n-not enemies. Besides, that noise was m-me.”

Shakira was a little shocked at his response but was quick to apologise to him before an awkward silence fell on them. A short while later, he jumped down from her head with sudden energy. “Couldn’t get more festive than that now,” he commented, intriguing Shakira. “Here, have a look through this shiny horseshoe I found at the stables yesterday. He scurried away to quickly return with a horseshoe that was as big as he was.  As she peered into the shoe, a look of astonishment swept across her face. A small clipping of a blooming plum blossom flower was tucked into her orange forelock; such a fair pink complimented her colours and made her look beautiful.

“Wow, thank you. I really do look more festive now,” she chuckled with him. “I need to go back to the den and show them your great gift. I hope to see you at the festival soon!”

“I’m sure you will, goodbye for now!” He whipped back, his mind starting to go back to the festivals ahead. Having said their goodbyes, Cheshire scarpered back home and Shakira headed to the den.

It took her a little while longer to get home as she didn’t want to ruin her looks or have the flower to fall out but she still got there in good time. She could hear the excited babble and mewing of her siblings before she even went in the den, so entered with preparation of how beautiful they would look. Shakira wasn’t disappointed. They were sitting in a line, one behind the other, with the head of a dragon costume sitting atop the front kitten’s head. Mother was using her claws to help stitch up what looked to be the body of the costume. It looked stunning, as her handicraft always was. Once finished, she picked up the costume delicately with her mouth, glancing over at Shakira with a look of helplessness. She got the hint and picked up the tail of the costume, taking it over to her siblings. They managed to fit it perfectly over them, the front kitten’s head going through the allotted hole. She stood back to see what her mother’s work looked like all together. The scales were a warm red, with a golden yellow lacing the edge of each scale. Its head was a mixture of the red and gold, with a white, furry frill around the eyes and mouth. There were 2 little slits on each side of the body so her brother and sister could see where they were going and enjoy the sights. The mouth of the dragon was open for her other brother to lead the way otherwise they would be a tumbling mess. It was so intricately done, she must have been working on it for months.

“…Wow,” is all Shakira could say as she studied each stitch.

Her mother laughed, “Ha ha, I’m glad the costume has left you speechless. Shows my 4 months of hard work has paid off. Though I must say you look very good yourself,” she remarked as she gave her a better look up and down. “I especially love the touch with the flower, it really suits you.”

Shakira blushed a little under her fur. “Thanks, it was a gift from a rat I met in the meadows called Cheshire. He’s also going to the festival with his family.”

“Well I can’t wait to see him. On that point, we better head out now if we don’t want to miss the start!” She had spent so long on grooming the kits and then finishing the costume that it was already almost noon. Luckily the festivities didn’t start until noon as every other animal had been out on New Year’s Eve for the fireworks to help ward off any evil spirits who would try to come today. She had been too tired to go but the kittens had made enough noise with their chittering and mews to make up for it. Luckily her mother didn’t need anything to wear either as she also had very festive colours of black, gold and red with a splotchy head and stripy body. She picked up her lantern and the kittens, whilst Shakira picked up her own. They went off giddily towards the buildings, thrilled at the thought of the atmosphere and scenery when they get there.

They lived quite a ways from the buildings so it took a while; but before long they could began to hear the festivals starting. She looked into the sky, the sun was at its highest: noon. Their casual walk turned into a run so they could get a good view of the parade that would start at any moment. Sure enough, the streets were lined with hundreds of animals. Cats, felines, mustelas, horses, wolves. Even the birds were here, sitting atop the buildings to watch from above. The only animals not here were the dolphins and fish, but they would join and watch the lanterns tonight instead. The whole family found themselves squashed together as they had to squeeze through many legs to try and get closer to the front. What made it even harder was the fact that the kits kept tripping over themselves as they were unfocused, looking around at the decorations in amazement. There were strings of lighting hanging from building to building, webbing them all together into one. Lanterns were hung along the lightings and outside the buildings, evenly spaced from one another in a most aesthetically-pleasing way. Several signs and posters were also plastered across buildings to celebrate these next few days of the New Year. Shakira smiled proudly at her siblings, knowing that they also loved this already and would always remember it. She could tell by how much they had tumbled around already that it was certainly going to make for an interesting day and she wasn’t disappointed. They managed to get close enough to the front that they could see the empty patch of street that was soon to be filled with colours and song. A whistle was heard and they looked around to see what it was. Could it be the start of the parade? They usually did a song first but maybe they just wanted to make it different… But it wasn’t the start of the parade. Shakira pricked her ears up and pinpointed the sound to her left, looking across to a very familiar rat watching her. It was Cheshire!

“Look everyone, its Cheshire, the rat I met in the meadows earlier!” She nodded her head in his direction. They each looked at the rat and at his pale blue fur. He wouldn’t exactly look the part if it wasn’t for his ‘glowing’ red eyes.

He noticed their looks but thankfully brushed them off jokingly. “I know I’m not that festive but hey, it’s hard to find something that fits! I’m not the only one either, meet my whole family. They’ve come from all across the land to be here today.”

Shakira, her mother and the kittens all weaved their way over to Cheshire at this. His family was one of the biggest they had seen. He had a mate, 6 brothers and sisters, his parents, 5 aunts and uncles and 3 grandparents. Preparing the traditional family meal last night must have been tiring unless they worked together to make it, Shakira wondered, still a little in shock at the family’s size. Before she pondered on this any longer, her ears detected the humming of a bird. It was quickly followed by the beautiful voices of the singers down the street, singing traditional songs to initiate the parade. Every animal quietened to a hush as they enjoyed the songs, awaiting the moment they could soon join in. 2 rows of singers danced in a light fashion as they came into view, dressed in red kimonos with flowered patterns. Just behind them were all manners of dragons, each different styles but all the traditional colours. There were dragon costumes worn by horses and draconis, large puppet dragons made by the skilled wolves and griffins, each holding them up by the sticks in their mouths. Snakes slithered across the street, their scales dyed red and gold. The puppets were moved up and down, like a dragon gliding over the currents in the wind whilst the snakes and costumed dragons danced in amazing formations, captivating the attention of all the onlookers even more. The kittens eagerly stood up, starting to dance too.

“Mother, can we please join in the dance too? We’re already wearing a dragon costume and it looks really fun!” They plead to her but to no avail.

“One day you can but not today. You are much too small so it’s too dangerous with all the dancing hooves and paws everywhere. It’s why the mustela, rats and geckos don’t take part in this bit either. Besides, we can join in soon after the last of the dragons.” Mother replied, causing an exasperated sigh from the kittens. Patience was still an area they were yet to learn at only 4 months old. There were more ‘dragons’ than Shakira remembered there being before, with a seemingly endless string of colourful dragons dancing down the street. With each passing dragon, the animals were starting to get restless, some beginning to mouth the words and others doing discreet dances with their bodies. Everyone was waiting and getting more and more hyped until some couldn’t resist breaking out into song or dancing to their heart’s content. Fortunately, the last of the dragons were now passing. Now was the best part. All the animals from further down the streets were now parading behind the dragons. Some were dancing, others singing. Not everyone was good at it but that didn’t matter. As the animals to their right started to join in the parade, they too got the chance to move forward to get involved in it. Shakira watched her siblings and felt that they couldn’t get any more excited than they were now they could join in. The atmosphere was electrifying, with smiles all around and the songs in everyones’ hearts. She wasn’t a big fan of dancing herself but she found herself compelled to bust a few moves, crossing paths with her mother’s dancing many times. She found herself laughing at how clumsy she was compared to her mother, who was one of the most talented dancers across the land. Such flowing movements and emotion in each move. She gave up trying to compete with her mother’s dancing and resorted to her singing, which she was much better at. She felt confident when it came to her singing and this was obvious to her mother and siblings who saw her head being held high, her chest puffed out and her tail upright, waving freely as she trotted along. The kittens each cheered her on before continuing, trying their best to copy the dance the skilled ‘dragons’ had done.

Nobody wanted the parade to end, having such fun with every note and every move made. But they eventually arrived at the lake and could go no further. The singers were now standing on a wooden platform at the edge of the waters for all to see, the dragons split between both sides of the platform. Everyone kept dancing and singing until the last note finally came and the dancing slowly ceased to a stop. The singers thanked them all for joining in with the celebrations, reminding them of the lantern release tonight. It seemed Shakira had enjoyed it so much that it was only after a remark by her mother that she released it was coming up to dusk: dinner time. Once the singers had finished having their say, the animals began to disperse and those with the dragon puppets and costumes headed home for a meal. Shakira’s mother and Cheshire were caught up in chatting when one of the horses from a dragon costume sauntered over.

“Here, 3 envelopes for 3 cute, little kittens. They each have a part of my luckiest horseshoe in, one that had me win 8 races in a row. I hope it brings you all the luck you deserve too,” he said in a kind, solemn tone whilst handing out a red envelope to each of the kittens whom had now taken off the costume.

Mother had noticed the kind gesture and was quick to comment to her kits. “Now what do you say to this kind stallion?”

“Thank you!” They all chirped together, pleased with their gift from the stranger.

“Indeed, thank you for sharing such a gift with my kittens. What is your name?” Her attention went back to the stallion, taking in his chestnut brown coat and dull blonde, flowing mane. She then noticed that all the other animals were gone, no other horses now within sight. “And where are your family? Are you all alone on the biggest family day of the year?” There was a long sigh and his head began to droop down so she was quick to apologise. “I’m sorry if I sound intrusive, I was just curious.” Her tail tucked between her legs in a submissive manner.

“No, no, it’s alright. It’s only natural to be curious.” He responded after a short silence. “My name’s Zalious. It’s hard to pronounce so you can just call me Zally. Back in my racing days I used to be called Speed Daemon. I don’t exactly have any family left now. I only have my older sister who is currently busy over the seas in a new land so couldn’t come. So yes, I have been alone. At least family-wise anyway. But I have been surrounded by people like you, with cheer and happiness galore.”

“Nice to meet you Zally,” Shakira piped up. “If there is one thing I learnt it’s that nobody should be alone on this day. How about you and Cheshire’s family come over to our den for a meal? You probably won’t be able to fit anything but your head in our den but it is better than being alone.”

“Thanks for the offer but I have a better idea. How about you come over to my stables? There is plenty of room for us all there,” he suggested, a bright spark in his eyes.

“We would like that a lot, thank you,” her mother replied, thankful that he was even more generous as she had recently run out of the food that had been stored over winter. All 22 of them strolled across the streets to the outskirts of the buildings where the stables were situated. His was the neatest of them all; straw and hay compacted in a corner, some straw covering the floor for comfort. A horseshoe was hung up by the opening to collect good luck. The wood next to it had a lighter coloured patch in the shape of a horseshoe, undoubtedly the one he had given to the kittens. Zalious pulled out a medium sized box for Shakira’s family and a smaller, thinner box for Cheshire’s family to put the food on. His muzzle rustled around his food tray as he quickly searched for a way to feed everyone. He pulled out traditional rice cakes and dumplings for everyone, each different sizes. He gave the smaller ones to the rats and left the bigger ones for himself, making sure not to give the rats food too big for their size. The kittens looked weirdly at it, normally eating meat and being the first time they had seen such strange food. He smiled at their reactions and pulled out a couple of dead crabs from his water bucket. He passed them over to Shakira’s mother who used her paws and strong teeth to break them open. There was enough crab meat in them to feed them all, pleasing the kits. They each tried the dumplings and rice cakes and their reactions made every animal laugh. Her sister loved the dumplings and was quick to bury her nose in some more, whilst her brothers scrunched up their noses at the peculiar taste of the rice cakes. But after the original taste they began to enjoy it more until everyone was tucking into the food.

It wasn’t long until all the food was gone, despite the chattering as they shared stories of past festivals and experiences. By now, the sun had gone down completely and stars were scattered in the sky. They agreed to go to the lake together and so headed off, catching up with the crowd who had already set off. The platform was still there, with the singers projecting their voices and songs across the whole crowd as the area began to fill up. Everyone was excited for the final part of the day but also exhausted from the long day they had. The area was packed with animals stood shoulder to shoulder, with a few horses and deer having to peer from the back. The main singer, a talented wolf whom almost stood on her hind legs alone, hushed the crowd and started to announce the last event.

“Thank you all for coming back again. I hope you have enjoyed today as we slowly bring it to a close with the finale, setting off our…” She was stopped mid-sentence as a strong light appeared in the shape of the moon, causing every animal to shield their eyes. The light descended gracefully onto the platform, fading to reveal a magnificent chicken. His feathers were compact, with his wings resting down by his side. Nobody had seen a chicken before and there was astonishment and happiness resounding in the air. The chicken seemed rather confused and a little dazed as he looked around, taking everything in.

“Oh my, it seems we have another species to welcome to this land! Last year we were blessed with the monkeys, whose hands helped to better craft the buildings we see today. And now it seems we have chickens! We may not know the full extent you can help build this community, I’m sure we’ll help you to find that special purpose here!” The wolf almost sang in a brill tone. A massive cheer swept through the crowd as the chicken flapped off the platform and tottered through the front rows for a place to go. Shakira saw his aimless walking and mewed to signal him over. There was a space just big enough for him to wedge himself into but any space was better than none at all. Once he got in, he felt a little more comfortable and less afraid of the massive crowd.

“Hi, I’m Gonji. I am a chicken though we males are usually called roosters and the females are hens. All I really know is that it is Chinese New Year and it is the year of the rooster. Could you fill me in on what is going on here specifically?” He looked at Shakira with question-filled curiosity.

“Hi Gonji. I’m Shakira and this is how we celebrate the New Year. Every animal comes together in harmony and friendship to start the year off. We had a parade earlier and just had our evening meals. You’re just in time for the second best part of the day: the setting off of the lanterns.” She replied, hoping that she could answer any and all questions in one go.

Her mother who was listening chimed in with glee, “And since it’s your first celebration, you can share my lantern.” As she spoke, 7 more blinding lights appeared in the sky, descending onto the platform to reveal more roosters and hens. They were all just as confused as each other so Gonji slid out from his space and took them to another, larger space to explain everything she had told him before coming back.

“Well now that our new animals have settled a little, I now announce it is time to release our lanterns and past selves, in hope of becoming a new, better version of ourselves this year!” As the she-wolf exclaimed this, lanterns began to rise simultaneously. They were all red but it was the black patterns on them that made each one unique. The kittens had one for them all with their paw-prints painted on, whilst Mother had a big heart painted in hers to show the love she had for her family and friends. Cheshire had one for his whole family in the shape of a flower, almost as pretty as the one he had given Shakira. Zally’s was very typical of horse and was a horseshoe in the hopes of having all good luck in the New Year. The most intricate one of the family however was Shakira’s, with a cat head painted on. She hadn’t been sure what to paint to make it unique but had decided to paint her face, including her short forelock and odd ears. Watching all the lights set off and float over the lake was calming, especially after such a tiring parade. It gave everyone time to reflect on how fun the day had been and one of the most observant kits noticed the themes, deciding to query it to his mother.

“Mother, I noticed that everyone was using red. In costumes, lanterns, in dyed fur and scales. Why did they use just red? Why not other colours like blue or green?”

“Because red is the colour that symbolises joy, virtue and truth. Everything that the New Year is about,” she replied in a kind, gentle tone. He seemed to take in this information in great stride, already focusing back on the lanterns disappearing into the night sky. Several animals yawned as it was now getting late and many had been up late the night before to watch the fireworks. Each animal said their goodbyes and filed out of the area swiftly, to return to their homes for rest. Shakira looked at Zally who said that he was going to give Shakira and his friends shelter in his stable for the night as they would start their search for a place to make a home in the morning. She nodded her head at this good idea and so said their goodbyes to them all, setting off out of town with Cheshire’s family in tow.

The grass in the meadows seemed a lot bigger at night as it towered over Shakira but they kept going along, humming the songs together in synchronisation. It wasn’t long into the meadows though until it became Cheshire’s turn to also separate ways with the cats.

“Today has been great fun, especially seeing how much the kittens enjoyed it. The first celebration is always the best, experiencing all the new atmosphere and food,” the kittens all nodded their heads in approval of Cheshire’s words. “Now we must head home and you need to get those kittens to bed before they start bouncing around again so I’m going to say goodbye. Hopefully we will meet again soon and maybe by then I will have little pups of my own I can introduce you to.”

Shakira chuckled at his words as the kittens were indeed a nightmare to settle down sometimes. There were times when they would go straight to bed but she had a feeling that wouldn’t be the case tonight. All of the rats bounded away, leaving just her family to head back to the den. Sure enough, the kits started to pick up energy again and began to leap through the grass, pretending to be dragons. They tried their best to roar but it only came out as a cute meow, springing as high as they could to imitate flying. They were loving every bit of playing as they progressed onto making their own miniature parade home. The quietest of the three decide not to take part in the parade and instead stuck close to her mother.

“I can’t wait to do it all again next year, I’ll be counting the days until then!” She stated to her mother, tail held high.

“Today was only the first day of the New Year. We can still have little celebrations as a family until the moon is full if you want,” Mother answered, pleased that she had liked today so much.

Both brothers heard her words and chose to answer with their sister. “Really?! Yes we would love to have even more celebrations!”

“I’m glad to hear that, but before we can do anything else we need to get into the den and you all need to rest up,” she was quick to add. Having this motivation meant the kittens hastily ceased their playing to walk calmly besides their mother, following her into the den to sleep. This year’s festival had definitely been more fun than last year’s and next year’s would indubitably be better than this year’s, Shakira thought as she curled herself up next to her siblings, her eyelids drooping ‘til she dozed off to the sound of their little snoring.

*When you get stuck in what seems to be a war about such an unreasonable thing.*

I feel like I end up stuck talking to little two year olds who start throwing hissy fits because they don't like what someone posted and then try and turn on the one attempting to defuse and control the posts. Like no, that isn't going to work with me. You can hate me, make memes at me, send a thousand hate messages at me, attack me where ever I go and I won't care. You can shitpost me everywhere you want but chances are you will do it in such a pathetic way I will do nothing but laugh. Either troll the trolls or don't go down to their level. Or, if you can, react sarcastically to their replies. It confuses the hell out of some, like some sort of poisonous food for them.

Often best way to try and resolve certain posts is to only reply briefly about their heated comment and then slowly find a way to turn it into a topic of something else (Like getting someone from talking about admins not fitting the 'theme' of a group to how cringy my ocs are. A smooth transition, unsuspecting and successful. It takes a lot of patience and determination to deal with drama successfully but as part of the group I will ensure that we pull through, together. For we are a herd who stick together and will not let haters or trolls get to us!

And then over on Ovi I have to deal with people being ignorant, others being nosy about said issue, trying to squeeze the answer of someone like blood out of a stone and any other issues in the group I co-own. I didn't sign up for this, heck, I didn't even know the owner until he randomly PM'd me last year asking for my opinion on something. And now we chat quite a bit, have a laugh about how weird us brits are (he's irish) and then he made me co-owner. And then he drops me into a post so now I have two people to also tutor for a couple of days ;-;

I need a break from having to socialise, not this. So if I don't reply much then its just because I am taking a break from people.

Why I love Ovi

3 min read
If anyone knows me from ovi then they would probably see from the green dot that I am addicted to the game. I am on for at least 5-6 hours everyday. Sometimes I have been on for over 12 hours in a day. It is such an awesome site that inspires and encourages creativity in all ages. Every pet is beautiful in its own way and being a bit of a hoarder, especially in the whole 'one man's junk is another man's treasure' area, I have gathered thousands over they year. Still have over a thousand I reckon. But, just like in real life, the little nightmares need feeding. So hundreds of them lay dead in their grave awaiting for me to revive them through the art of Satanism XD  But it isn't just the pets that have kept me going back to the game but the users too. Though you will of course get those who want to otherwise troll, break rules and harass, the majority are generous and kind. The only reason I became paid was because someone was kind enough to spend their money on someone they have never met. I too have done the same back to others and the response is superb. I never realised just how helpful everyone was until to day when the game glitched. I finally gathered the credits to splice a mutation onto my egg and hatch it. I named it and sent it to the right tab. Went to look in the tab and it was nowhere to be found. Went on the prowl and found out it had sent itself to the Adoption Center. I felt like I had sent the troublesome teen to his room but he had escaped out the window to do a runner whilst my back was turned... After the hard earned credits I spent on this I was pretty p****d so sent a message to every group so I could retrieve it. Within minutes people started replying, saying they would keep an eye out. The pet has become 'very popular' as everyone is liking to help track it better. And several have even put their hands in their pockets and given me credits to refund me. Their generosity is most frustrating though as I hate to accept something without being able to give something decent and wanted back. But two of them refused. I will find something for them one day. I have even put a message on my wall to say I won't accept more credits because I feel too bad like I am lynching off them. But this immense amount of help has genuinely surprised me and made my day. My day was crap from the beginning, got worse as the day went on especially after the lovely argument with my nan, and then got the worst when the guy upped and left. But this made it all so much better. I honestly don't think I will be disappearing from the site for years to come. Only way I am coming off is if I die or the site is deleted XD
